Prototype availability does not guarantee mass production. Focus on manufacturability and consistency during the design transfer phase.
Prototypes verify that functions are implemented; mass production validates batch consistency. This difference in focus makes design transfer a formal review process.
Common issues include pad designs that are feasible for manual soldering but difficult to guarantee with surface-mount technology, component spacing that does not meet automated pick-and-place requirements, and missing test points that prevent rapid defect localization on the production line.
Another often-overlooked step is the programming and testing process. Before mass production, confirm the programming method, cycle time, and test fixture throughput to prevent bottlenecks in capacity.
The Design Transfer Review output should include a manufacturability checklist, test specifications, and criteria for the first article production. These documents serve as the basis for ramping up production.
